When a school loses heat in the middle of winter, it’s more than an inconvenience—it can force closures and disrupt an entire community.

That was the situation facing Tippecanoe School Corporation when their Johnson Controls Metasys system and DX9100 controllers failed. With no direct replacement available and temperatures among the coldest of the year, the risk of canceling school became very real.

The VASEY team responded quickly.

Rather than attempting a temporary fix, the team placed the system into manual operation to maintain heat until replacement parts arrived, then moved forward with a full control upgrade. New Honeywell controllers were installed, restoring operation across the school’s boiler and chiller systems and bringing everything back online.

The work required coordination in real time—managing equipment, controls, and system integration under pressure—while ensuring the solution would be reliable moving forward, not just a short-term patch.

The Result

The system was stabilized, heat was maintained during the coldest conditions, and the school was able to remain open as planned.

In addition to the system upgrade, the team also reorganized and updated control panels, including modifications to a JACE panel to integrate the new Honeywell technology. The updated system provides a more user-friendly interface and positions the facility for easier maintenance and long-term performance.

Situations like this highlight the importance of responsiveness, technical expertise, and the ability to act decisively when conditions are less than ideal.
